Lindbergh girls fall to Pacific in title game

In the championship game of the recent Seckman Tournament, the average spectator would have believed the basketball game was over after the third quarter.

After three quarters Dec. 29, the Lindbergh High School girls’ basketball team held a commanding 46-34 lead over Pacific.

But the show clearly was not over as the Indians went on the warpath and outscored the Flyers 24-9 in the fourth quarter en route to a 58-55 upset over Lindbergh.

“We knew it would be a tough game,” Lindbergh head coach Bill Thoele told the Call. “I think we just started to stand around and try to run out the clock. We just were not as aggressive as we needed to be.”

The Flyers (6-3) were led by Amy Hake’s 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. The junior guard has been outstanding all season as she’s averaged 18.9 points per game, while grabbing 4.2 rebounds a game. She leads the team in steals (43) and is fourth in assists with 17.

“Amy’s just going to go out there and get her points,” Thoele said. “What we have to worry about is everyone else is getting their points.”

Also scoring in double figures was Paul Smith, who garnered 15 points and six rebounds. The junior forward also blocked six shots by the Indians.

“Paula works very hard,” Thoele said. “With that kind of attitude, you’re only going to get better.”

Meaghan Endicott was the third Flyer to score in double figures with 10 points and eight rebounds. The sophomore center also recorded one steal for the Flyers in their loss to Pacific.

“Meaghan’s got the potential to be a double-figure scorer,” Thoele said. “We knew from the beginning that she could be a post player at the varsity level. I think that the post is going to be a strong area for us by the end of the season.”

The Flyers return to competition at 7 p.m. Friday in their toughest game of the season when they play host to Parkway West. The game will be the Flyers’ first Suburban West Conference match of the season and Thoele knows that if a league championship is in the mix, they’re going to have to deal with the Longhorns first.

“I definitely think that we’re in the running to win conference,” the Lindbergh coach said. “They’re a little bigger than we are, but it’s a very winnable game for us.”
