It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the girls’ basketball team at Lindbergh Senior High School.

The Flyers (6-6, 0-2 Suburban West Conference) are in the midst of a four-game losing streak — three of those four losses were by an average of four points.

“We just can’t get over the hump and win those close ones,” Flyers head coach Bill Thoele told the Call. “I think that we’re down just a little bit. But of our six losses, five of them have been pretty tough.”

The Flyers were on the road last Friday evening at Lafayette and it was another one of those frustrating losses for the green and gold as they dropped a 55-47 decision to the Lancers. One of the keys to the game was the fact that the Flyers shot just 38.5 percent from the free-throw line when they average nearly 70 percent as a team.

“We’re shooting close to 70 percent as a team from the free-throw line,” Thoele said. “It was one of the unusual aspects of the game. I also think that our turnovers are killing us.”

The Flyers turned over the ball 19 times against Lafayette after averaging just 14.83 a game this season.

Junior Amy Hake led the Flyers with 15 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds in the loss to Lafayette.

Thoele believes that Hake is doing everything possible to get the Flyers in the win column.

“She went way beyond the effort you expect out of anybody,” Thoele said. “She’s trying to do it all for us right now.”

Also showing a solid effort for the Flyers was the sophomore duo of Meaghan Endicott and Courtney Kiel. The two centers averaged nine points each with Endicott recoding six rebounds and one assist, while Kiel grabbed two rebounds and made one blocked shot.

“Meaghan’s getting better every game and she works so extremely hard that it’s unbelievable,” Thoele said. “The Lafayette game was Courtney’s best game of the year. She’s got the skills, but I think she needs a little more intensity in her play.”

Lindbergh is back in action this Friday as the team travels to Kirkwood for a key conference showdown with the Pioneers.

“We just have got to get a win in conference,” Thoele said. “Kirkwood is a young team, but they’re playing pretty good. What we need to do is reduce turnovers and play good team defense.”

The Flyers game against Kirkwood is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
