As it enters the final stretch of the 2004 regular season, the Lindbergh High School boys’ baseball team now is in control of its own destiny.

The Flyers (14-4, 8-2 Suburban West) appear to be in a bombing run of some sort as they racked up their fourth straight win this season.

“It’s pretty exciting right now,” Flyers head coach Darin Scott told the Call.

“We’ve picked the right time to win a few games in a row. We now control our own destiny in the conference.”

Lindbergh avenged a 10-0 loss to Kirkwood earlier this season with a 9-6 win over the Pioneers.

“When you get beat like we did by Kirkwood earlier in the year, you realize that you’ve got to come out every day ready to play,” Scott explained. “This week was probably our best defensive week of the season.”

Senior starting pitcher Scott Hicks threw a solid six innings for the Flyers as he gave up two earned runs on seven hits. Hicks walked two and struck out three in his fifth win of the season. Currently Hicks is 5-0 with a 3.16 earned-run average.

“I thought Scott did a great job pitching,” Scott said. “Whenever they (Kirkwood) came up with a couple hits, Scott came back with some great pitches.

“I think that the key for Scott is getting the leadoff hitter out and not walking people that much.”

Two players who had solid afternoons at the plate were senior outfielder Jeff Malke and senior second baseman Tony Bigogno.

Malke was 2-4 at the plate with three runs batted in and one triple. He’s currently batting a stout .468 with 15 RBI.

“I’m just thrilled that Jeff is having a great season,” Scott said. “He’s been doing a great job driving in runs and has really stepped it up for us this year.”

Bigogno put the Flyers onto the scoreboard in their win over the Pioneers with a two-run home run in the second inning, which happened to be his first homer of the season.

“Tony’s actually been swinging the bat really well,” Scott said. “He’s doing a really nice job defensively at second base and has been hitting the ball pretty solid.”

The Flyers are back in action Wednesday, May 5, as they play conference rival Mehlville at Heine Meine Park in Lemay.

Mehlville handed Lindbergh an 8-3 loss earlier this season and possibly could spoil the Flyers’ chances for a league championship.

“This is the pinnacle of our season as far as conference play goes,” Scott explained.

“We’re looking forward to playing at Heine Meine at night. I’m sure that Mehlville wouldn’t love anything more than to knock us out of the conference race,” he added.

The Flyers game with Mehlville is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
