Lindbergh Flyers soar: Kick eight goals, allow none in two-game winning streak

After scoring just one goal during a three-game skid, the Lindbergh High School girls’ soccer team is soaring.

The Flyers (11-5, 5-3 Suburban West) have kicked eight goals, while shutting out their last two opponents.

On May 5, Lindbergh bombed the States-men of Webster Groves 6-0 for its second straight win.

“The key for us was that our defenders were very active in our offense,” head coach Mark Giesing told the Call. “What they were creating in patience and vision is what did it for us.”

Sophomore forward Aly Reynolds got the Flyers on the scoreboard in the first half with her fourth goal of the year. Rey-nolds has endured a rough season, including a bout of mononucleosis and nagging knee problems.

“Aly has had a difficult year because she’s had to fight mono and a nagging knee injury,” Giesing said. “She’s been able to give us a lot of valuable minutes up top here lately.”

In the second half, Lindbergh’s Bridget Holmes snuck three shots by Webster Groves’ goalie, giving her seven goals on the season, second on the team.

“She (Holmes) was really on in this particular game,” Giesing said. “I think that this was really her coming-out game.”

Freshman standout Aimee Ubriaco also scored for the Flyers, a common feat.\

The midfielder has 16 goals and seven assists this season.

Ubriaco has spent most of the season at the forward position but Giesing moved her into the midfield to free up the rest of the Lindbergh offense.

“Aimee’s been putting in a lot of goals for us and has been getting a lot of intense and physical marking from other teams,” Gie-sing said. “By dropping her back to midfield, it’s really opened things up for us.”

Lindbergh’s final goal of the game came from Sarah Ghidina. It was the freshman midfielder’s first of the season.

“Sarah started the year at wing back and we moved her to wing midfield and she’s done a great job for us,” Giesing said. “She did a nice job at finishing on a ball that was played in the box.”

Junior goalkeeper Haley Fox recorded her eighth shutout of the season in the win against Webster Groves. She is 11-5 this season with a 1.00 goals-against average.

“Haley’s continuing to develop and really controls the ball and is a physical presence out there,” Giesing said. “She’s been a nice, steady factor back there for us this year.”

Lindbergh is back in action at 6 p.m. today — May 12 — as the Flyers travel to Parkway North for a non-conference meeting with the Vikings. Parkway North is 5-10 overall and just suffered a 2-0 setback to Pattonville.

“By Thursday’s game, we hope to have everything in place for districts,” Giesing said. “It should be one of the first times that we have our original starting 11 in the starting lineup.”
