After starting last season with a four-game losing streak, the Lindbergh High School football team kicked off the 2005 campaign last week with a 19-13 overtime victory over the Summit Falcons.

Friday night’s win at home for the Flyers (1-0) avenged a 38-9 loss to Summit in the season opener last year.

Lindbergh head coach Tom Beauchamp was pleased with his team’s effort.

“The kids played really well,” Beau-champ told the Call. “It was a hard-fought game and I’m really excited for them.”

The Flyers jumped on the scoreboard late in the second quarter as senior quarterback Joe Haas connected with senior wide re-ceiver Kelan Bannecke on a 27-yard touch-down pass.

“Kelan’s such a good ballplayer and they (Summit) covered him really well,” Beau-champ said. “But he had some good moves and got some chances to get the ball.”

Beauchamp was also pleased with the performance on the field by the Flyers starting quarterback.

“Joe ran with the ball really well and was tough to bring down last night,” he said. “He was really on his game last night.”

The Flyers extended their lead to 13-0 as senior Drew Yanker ran back a 98-yard kickoff return.

“Drew got some momentum going and the front wall got him a nice seam,” Beau-champ recalled.

“Their kicker got his foot and we thought he was going to go down. He then recovered and turned on the jets and there was nobody around him,” the coach added.

Summit responded late in the third quarter as Zach McFerren scored on a 26-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 13-6.

McFerren scored again in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard run with 9:14 left to play.

“They (Summit) have a very good ball team,” Beauchamp said. “The officiating crew also did a great job for a first game of the year when everyone’s rusty.”

The two teams headed into overtime with the score tied 13-13, but the Flyers wasted no time in taking the lead as Haas connected on a 25-yard pass to senior wide receiver Martin Bates to win the game.

“Martin’s been nursing an ankle injury and we played him in only one play of the game,” Beauchamp said. “Joe threw one heck of a pass to him to win the game.”

Up next for the Flyers is a Suburban West Conference meeting with the Oakville Ti-gers.

Oakville defeated North County 31-6 Friday night under first-year head coach Arlee Conners.

The former Lindbergh graduate has the Tigers on a roll after coming off a 2-8 record last season that included a 21-20 win at Lindbergh.

Beauchamp knows his players will have to be well prepared for Oakville.

“Arlee coached with me for a year and we’re good friends,” the Lindbergh coach said. “They (Oakville) have got some good players and Arlee’s got them rolling.”

Lindbergh’s game at Oakville is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
