Students in the Lindbergh High School Class of 2012 were awarded 711 scholarships with a monetary value of $13.39 million, Principal Dr. Ron Helms said during the school’s graduation ceremony May 29. He lauded the students for leading the student body toward achieving National School of Character and Missouri Gold Star School honors during the 2011-12 school year.

“You have shown that you know what it means to live out LHS’ six pillars of character education,” Helms said. “In fact, these seniors have given more than 4,000 hours of service back to the community, in addition to excelling in the classroom.”

The graduates – 480 in all – walked across the stage and received their diplomas during an evening ceremony at Chaifetz Arena. The ceremony began with a tribute to classmate Jake Franzel, who passed away in January following a courageous battle with osteosarcoma, and longtime employee Mike Stammer, who suffered a fatal heart attack, also in January.

The flyers who turned their tassels Tuesday night will soar on to promising plans that will further their lives, educations and careers. Ninety percent of them will attend 90 different colleges, while 4 percent will enroll in schools of advanced training, 1 percent will serve in the military and 5 percent will enter the workforce.

This year, LHS was once again ranked among America’s best high schools by Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and the Washington Post. Of the 711 scholarships awarded to this year’s class, 29 received Missouri Bright Flight Scholarships, 184 were A+ Scholarship candidates, 35 students received athletic scholarships and 15 received scholarships for music, theater and art.

The class of 2012 also includes nine National Merit Finalists, 10 National Merit Semifinalists, 10 National Merit Commended Students, 47 George Washington Carver Award winners, 172 Charles A. Lindbergh Scholars and 18 International Baccalaureate candidates. The Class of 2012 also includes six foreign exchange students who plan to return to their home countries to continue their education.
