Letter writer wonders where Ameren Missouri’s conscience is

To the editor:

I have become aware of the coal-ash pits at Ameren Missouri’s Meramec Energy Center and their close proximity to Rogers Elementary School.

During the summer, the Sierra Club encouraged a lot of its members and interested citizens to attend a County Council meeting to explore and explain this situation at more length.

I was amazed and saddened at what I learned. I was also quite surprised that no representative of Ameren spoke.

A great deal has changed since the energy center opened, but Ameren Missouri has not kept up with the changes. Why are they still burning coal, when solar and wind are so much more energy efficient and healthy for the environment?

Ameren advertises the use of solar, but doesn’t practice what it preaches. I am also shocked that it proposes to build a new landfill at this site. Where is its conscience?
