To the editor:
I believe I have come up with a wonderful idea for a Christmas present.
This present will require sacrifice. It will require faith. But in the end, it will make our society safer.
I would like to suggest that gun owners voluntarily turn in their guns to the police.
This present would help reduce the number of murders and suicides, especially among women and children, that occur in households where there is a gun.
It would also help reduce the danger that police officers face when they are called to a house because of a domestic dispute where a gun is involved.
I know most gun owners would oppose this because they want to protect their households or protect the public if they conceal and carry. But I call on them to sacrifice these ideas and have faith that their Christmas present would do a greater service by reducing violence and protecting the most vulnerable of society.
