Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
This is in response to Tyler Benbow’s letter in the Feb. 13 edition of Call Newspapers. First he quotes the First Amendment to the Constitution: “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion.” But, as many liberals do, he failed to include the rest, “or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
The original intent of the first part was to prevent Congress from making a law requiring all citizens to be of a particular faith, which was the case in England at the time, not to disallow any mention of religion in the public square — which is supported by the second part quoted above.
Mr. Benbow only writes of the mother’s body and rights. However, there are two bodies involved, the mother’s and the baby’s. Science shows that the baby is a separate human being by the fact the baby has a very different DNA from the mother. What about the baby’s body and rights?
Mr. Benbow also tried to discredit the pro-life view because it is based on the Bible, as numerous of our laws are. Would he also try to throw out laws pertaining to murder because the Bible says “Thou shalt not kill”?
