Three quarters of good play unfortunately doesn’t guarantee a win.

That was the case for the Lindbergh High girls’ basketball team last Friday as the Flyers dropped a 59-57 overtime decision at home against Hazelwood West.

“We played hard and never gave up,” Lindbergh head coach Bill Thoele told the Call. “We played three good quarters and the third quarter is what cost us the game.”

Lindbergh (5-1) found itself with a slim 29-25 lead at halftime, but the Wildcats pounced back, ravaging the Flyers for 23 points in the third quarter of play.

“They (Hazelwood West) came out with a little more intensity in the third quarter and they really put it to us,” Thoele said. “We just didn’t take care of the ball the way we are used to. We had 26 turnovers, but still had the chance to win the game.”

The Flyers Amy Hake scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss against Hazelwood West. The senior guard also recorded six steals and three assists against the Wildcats.

“Amy just comes out and plays hard in every game,” Thoele said. “She does what we need her to do in order to win and is the reason we’re as good as we are.”

Lindbergh’s Meaghan Endicott also scored in double figures as she recorded an effort of 10 points against Hazelwood West. The junior center also chalked up 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals in the loss to the Wildcats.

“Meaghan’s been doing that in just about every game for us,” Thoele said. “She’s got a desire like Amy that she doesn’t want to lose. She really likes to get out there and play it rough.”

Up next for the Flyers is a tough Suburban West Conference match at 7 p.m. Friday at Mehlville.

“Any time that we play Mehlville, it’s always going to be a good time,” Thoele said. “We’ve just got to try and get a full-court game going and if we do that, I think that we’ve got a good chance of winning.”
