Laclede Gas warns customers of recent scam

Laclede Gas warns customers of a recent scam claiming the Obama Administration will pay utility bills through a new federal program.

Customers are asked for personal information that may lead to identity theft. No federal program exists, according to a Laclede Gas news release.

The Better Business Bureau reports customers are being contacted by phone, fliers, social media and text. The scammers request a social security number and bank routing number. Customers are then provided with a fraudulent bank routing number to pay their bill.

Tips for Laclede Gas customers:

•  If you have any questions about your Laclede Gas bill, please contact the Laclede Gas customer service line directly at 314-621-6960.

• If you receive a call claiming to be Laclede Gas and you feel pressured or unsure if the person is a Laclede Gas employee, hang up and call the customer service line directly.

•  Never provide your Social Security number, bank routing number or credit card information to anyone claiming to be a Laclede Gas representative at your house.
