Journalism students earn national honors

Oakville Senior High School journalism students were rewarded for their hard work at the recent National High School Journalism Convention in Kansas City.

The students’ monthly school broadcast, Channel 97 News, was one of only 10 programs in the nation to earn Best in Show recognition in the Broadcast Program category, according to a school district news release.

Additionally, Oakville senior Chloe Ward earned an Excellent rating in the Broadcast Newswriting category during the convention’s individual write-off contest.

“I’m proud of what my students have accomplished so far this year,” Jeff Kuchno, who advises journalism, yearbook and newspaper students at Oakville High, stated in the release.

“The school district’s decision to approve broadcast journalism as a class has paid huge dividends,” Kuchno continued. “These students have learned how to produce visual stories in an efficient and interesting manner, and I expect their work to get even better.”

Kuchno presented a session at the convention titled “Smorgasbord Design” to nearly 300 high school journalism students and advisers.

The presentation focused on yearbook layout and design.

The National High School Journalism Convention is co-sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association.

Approximately 4,500 students and staff advisers from across the country attended this year’s conference, according to the release.
