Johnny Mac wins two in Indiana tournament

The Johnny Mac Thunder U-18 baseball team (12-5) competed in the Hoosier Baseball Classic in Fort Wayne, Ind., last weekend and racked up a record of 2-2 in pool play.

The Johnny Mac team finished the wood-bat tournament with a 5-2 win over the Lombard, Ill., Lightning.

“It was actually a fun game,” Johnny Mac head coach Sean Worrall told the Call. “We had pitchers playing in the field while other guys had the day off. We went out there and had a good time and won the ballgame.”

Johnny Mac starting pitcher Clayton Camp gave up one run on four hits in five innings pitched. Camp also walked four batters and struck out five.

“Clayton pitched really well,” Worrall said. “This was a wood-bat tournament, so when you go out and throw strikes, you win games.”

Johnny Mac’s Stephen Johnson relieved Camp in the sixth inning and gave up one run on one hit in two innings pitched. Johnson struck out one batter and garnered the save.

“We pretty much know what we’re going to get out of Stephen,” Worrall said. “He pitched a solid game.”

Johnny Mac is back in action Saturday as they play host to the St. Louis Tigers at Mehlville Senior High School in a doubleheader. The Tigers handed the Thunder a 12-3 loss on June 4 as the Thunder generated just three runs on six hits.

“We actually played them earlier in the season, and I think we owe them one,” Worrall said. “I’m sure the boys will be ready to play this one.”

Johnny Mac’s doubleheader against the Tigers is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
