Johnny Mac’s Brian Mooney threw a solid six-inning performance Friday night, giving up just one run to help lead the Thunder to an impressive 10-1 win over the Hillsboro Barnstormers.

“Basically we started out pretty hot by scoring four runs in the first,” Johnny Mac head coach Nick Beckmann told the Call. “It (the score) was 4-1 until the bottom of the sixth. Their pitcher did a good job at keeping us off balance.”

Mooney’s impressive six-inning outing primarily was due to a three-hit performance that included 10 strikeouts. Mooney currently is 1-0 overall with a 3.82 earned run average.

“He was throwing BBs at them and was getting ahead in the count,” Beckmann said. “He could be a No. 1 starter on a lot of other teams. He just shut them (Hillsboro) down for six innings.”

Mooney was relieved by Bob Bauer in the seventh inning. Bauer walked one batter and struck out one in one inning pitched.

He’s currently 2-0 overall with a 1.27 earned run average.

“Bob came in and threw about 15 pitches,” Beckmann said. “This was kind of a bullpen situation for him and he came in and threw really well.”

Johnny Mac shortstop Steve Braun had a stellar day at the plate with a 3-4 performance that included a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Braun scored three runs and recorded four runs batted in.

“We just got him back from the high school season,” Beckmann said. “We’re glad that we’ve got him because he’s a heck of a player.”

Johnny Mac first baseman Tom Belgeri and third baseman Jason Brown were two other players who had a solid day at the plate for the Thunder Friday.

Belgeri went 3-4 with a double and one run batted in. Brown on the other hand was 2-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in.

The Thunder is on the road this weekend as it travels to Louisville, Ky., for tournament play. The Thunder’s head coach is hoping that not only his own team but also three other Johnny Mac teams traveling to Louisville have a strong showing.

“We’re going with three other teams in the organization,” Beckmann said. “Hopefully we’ll have a good showing for the Johnny Mac organization.”
