Jim Murphy

Died: Thursday, October 11, 2012

Age: 87

Former state Rep. Jim Murphy, 87, died Oct. 11 at his Crestwood residence.

Rep. Murphy served 20 years in the Missouri House of Representatives, representing District 95.

He also served on the Crestwood Board of Aldermen in 1981 and 1982 and was a former school board member at Our Lady of Providence.

Rep. Murphy graduated with a bachelor of arts in philosophy from St. Louis University and also attended Washington University.

He received the Meritorious Public Service Award from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat in 1984, and was named the Crestwood/Sunset Hills News Citizen of the Year in 1988.

Rep. Murphy is a past national president of the American Drive-In Operators Association and a past president of the St. Louis Chapter of the Missouri Restaurant Association.

During his service in the Missouri House, he published the Capitol Report and authored “How to Appeal Your Property Tax Assessment.”

Rep. Murphy is survived by his wife of more than 51 years, Carol Murphy (nee Popovsky); daughter and son in-law, Karen Ann (Larry) Hall; son, James W. Murphy; siblings, Robert Emmett (Patricia) Murphy, Peggy (the late Edward) Delworth, Joan (Henry) Yario and the late Patricia Ann (survived by Ken) Belcher.

Visitation was at Kutis Affton Chapel. Services were at Kutis Affton Chapel and Our Lady of Providence Catholic Church.

Interment was in Resurrection Cemetery.
