Youngsters from Hancock Elementary, St. Francis and the Mehlville School District recently competed in the Oakville Elks’ annual “Hoop Shoot” basketball free-throw contest.

This contest is the first step in the Elks National “Hoop Shoot” free-throw program.

In the local contest, the boys’ 10- and 11-year-old division was tied, as was the girls’ 12- and 13-year-old division, which forced a best-out-of-five shoot-out.

Micky Summers and Rebecca Hern both made three out five shoots in the tie-breaker to win their respective divisions.

The best overall free-throw shooter of the day was Michael Musielak, who made 21 of 25 free-throw attempts to win the boys’ 12- and 13-year-old division.

Shawn Collins was runner-up with 18 of 25 attempts.

All contestants received a certificate and trophies were awarded to the top three finishers in all divisions, according to a news release.

The first-place winners now will compete in the district contest Saturday, Jan. 31, at Windsor High School.
