High school choirs earn national awards

High school choirs from the Mehlville School District recently earned top honors in national competitions.

Mehlville Senior High School choirs competed in Orlando, Fla., while Oakville Senior High School choirs competed in Anaheim, Calif.

Under the direction of Angela Hendrick, Mehlville High choirs competed in the Heritage Music Festival in Orlando, Fla. Mehlville’s Concert Choir Mixed Group finished in a first-place tie with Mehlville’s Mixed Chamber Choir, with each group winning an Outstanding Choral Group trophy along with its Gold Awards.

Also winning Gold Awards for earning at least 90 of 100 possible points at the competition were Mehlville’s Concert Choir Treble, Show Choir, Women’s Chamber Choir and Concert Choir Men. The entire Mehlville program received the Choral Sweepstakes Award.

Under the direction of Paula Martin and Assistant Director Kimberly Jeffs, and accompanied by Hendrick, Oakville High choirs competed in the National Heritage Festival in Anaheim, Calif.

The choir members returned to St. Louis with some impressive trophies as they dominated the 2003 music festival in Ana-heim, winning all major awards.

Competing against choirs from several states, the Oakville choirs distinguished themselves at the competition with “Su-perior” ratings, the highest rating possible.

Besides outstanding performances, they were invited to attend one of the National Invitational Choral Festivals, which will take place in New York City, Salt Lake City and Chicago in 2004.
