In a symbolic move, the Green Park Board of Aldermen has banned funeral protests inside the city.
The unanimous vote to ban funeral protests was not a reaction to any past or proposed protest, but is instead a symbolic gesture meant to show support for military families, said Ward 1 Alderman Tony Pousosa, who introduced the bill. A church in Kansas has targeted military funerals for protests in the past.
“While we haven’t had any incidents here, I think this is a way to be proactive, rather than reactive,” he said, noting that Green Park has two churches that hold funerals.
