Gravois Kiwanis Club to celebrate 75 years of service

The Gravois Kiwanis Club of South County will host an honoree party at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Genesis Banquet Center, 2651 Telegraph Road, to celebrate 75 years of service to the communities around the St. Louis area.

Kiwanians, a group of caring individuals of all walks of life, have strived hard to help youth and others in need around the community, according to a news release. The club has given countless hours of service and donations to many different charitable agencies, families and even local sports programs throughout the area.

Below are highlights on the 75 years of Gravois Kiwanis history:

• The Gravois Kiwanis was charted as a club in 1937 and met at the same location the club currently meets every Wednesday — at Sam’s Steakhouse on Gravois Road.

• At the club’s peak, it had about 625 members on its roster serving the local community.

• From the beginning, the club was nationally recognized by its parent club, Kiwanis International, for initiating various membership and fund raising programs that were a head of its time.

• The Gravois Club has helped get six other Kiwanis Clubs and six local Key Clubs chartered in the Greater St. Louis area.

• To date, the club has given more than $65,000 in scholarship money to local high school students in need.
