Grant to fund mammograms

St. Anthony’s Medical Center recently received a $30,870 grant from the St. Louis Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. to provide screening mammograms to uninsured and underinsured women in south county and northern Jefferson County.

“It’s a good opportunity to reach out to the community and provide free screenings to women who couldn’t otherwise get them,” Jane Kraus, senior director of oncology services at St. Anthony’s, stated in a news release.

The grant will provide mammograms at the Breast Center in the Medical Plaza for about 400 women. Women ages 40 to 49 who meet certain criteria will be targeted.

The screenings are available now through Oct. 31.

Information about the availability of the mammograms will be sent to various obstetricians, primary-care doctors and internists.

The Jefferson County Department of Health also will help identify eligible women.

Money for this grant and other local grants was raised through this year’s Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure.” Race for the Cure is trademarked and includes various fund-raisers throughout the year to provide money for grants.
