Good news about Mehlville School District to continue, Knost says

To the editor:

Amidst the momentum, positive feelings and a unity beyond what has been experienced in years, maybe decades, there is still the occasional need for some to put a negative spin on the progress of the Mehlville School District.

We saw this last week in a letter to the editor complaining about Mehlville’s construction projects. No matter how you slice it, the fact remains our current projects are being completed without the need of a bond issue or tax-rate increase.

Before becoming superintendent, I had countless community members tell me they didn’t want us knocking on the door looking for support of large tax increases. We’ve honored that request while still managing to navigate our schools in a very positive direction.

Regardless, I suppose some prefer the criticisms to continue. There seems to be a certain angst that comes with the Mehlville School District shining brightly.

For those who welcome the good news, I can assure you it isn’t going to stop. You will continue to hear more and more about the progress of our schools and our students as the days, weeks, months and years pass. Just yesterday we learned that four more schools in our district are finalists for National Schools of Character.

A total of only nine Missouri schools are being considered for this prestigious achievement in 2013 and this district houses four of them.

The Mehlville School District has developed historic momentum through significant progress in recent times. State accreditation scores show Mehlville as one of the highest-performing districts in the state. We’ve cut significantly from previous administrative expenses while fully budgeting for an effective five-year facilities and technology plan.

We maintain a triple-A bond rating and one of the lowest residential tax rates in St. Louis County. We’re operating in a very transparent manner and my door remains open for thoughts, concerns and constructive suggestions.

The Mehlville School District absolutely is one of the best school districts in the state of Missouri. We will continue to be good stewards while staying focused on student achievement and providing our diverse community with an outstanding return on their investment.

Please always know you can contact me with any concerns or suggestions at (314) 467-5001.
