Fund-raiser set next week for injured man

A fund-raiser is planned next week for an Arnold man who was caught in the crossfire of a fight while leaving a bar with friends.

As a result of the Feb. 19 incident, 26-year-old Jason Smith lies in a hospital suffering brain contusions without health-care coverage and facing major brain surgery that ultimately will determine his future.

Family and friends are conducting a fund-raiser to support Smith’s medical bills at 8 p.m. Friday, May 6 at Andre’s Banquet Center, 4254 Telegraph Road.

The cost is $25 for dinner, an open bar, a DJ, a silent auction and dancing.

Checks also can be made payable to the Jason Smith Special Fund and dropped off at Regions Bank under the Jason Smith Special Fund Account No. 6901995042 or mailed to Cindy Breer at 5407 Chatfield Drive, St. Louis 63129.

The details of the Feb. 19 incident are un-clear.

“Supposedly there was a big fight between a bunch of people and he was basically in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Ashley Lueckenhoff, a friend of Smith’s. “Some say he was involved in it, but we don’t think so because he didn’t know any of those people.”

Smith is responsive, but still isn’t walking and faces a long rehabilitation process followed by surgery, said girlfriend Cara Rumbolo.

For information about how to help, contact Lueckenhoff at (314) 614-6297, Rumbolo at (314) 750-7896 or Christie Pollihan at (314) 378-9197.
