Life in the coaching world can be a frustrating experience and such is the case for Johnna Wieter, the girls’ volleyball coach at Lindbergh Senior High School.

The Flyers (19-6-2, 3-3 Suburban West) have shown signs of brilliance this season as they’ve played to their fullest potential.

Case in point is a seven-game winning streak that they exploded with last month.

Yet at other times, Lindbergh finds itself in a sticky situation in which it lacks a killer instinct that Wieter believes is needed for the team to go to the next level.

“Aggression is the one thing that I think we lack, which leads us to lose our confidence,” Wieter told the Call. “We just need to play aggressive all the time.”

Lindbergh was anything but passive last Friday evening as it battled its way through pool play in the Suburban South/West tournament.

The Lindbergh Flyers slammed Kirk-wood 25-13, 25-23 in game one of the tournament and then turned around immediately and trounced Parkway Central 25-13, 25-15.

Yet Lindbergh began losing steam late Friday evening as it had a split decision against Parkway South 25-10, 18-25 disappointment.

“I felt that on Friday night we played our style of game,” Wieter said. “I think that our mental game is just not strong right now.

“Sometimes we lack intensity and I don’t know why. It’s very frustrating,” she added.

On Saturday morning, the Flyers found their wings clipped in the first round of elimination play as they succumbed to Oakville 25-16, 25-20.

The loss to the Tigers was nothing less than frustrating for Wieter and her coaching staff.

“Mentally, we were just not ready,” said Wieter. “Our heads were not in the game and the passing was just not on. We lacked the defense to play with Oakville.”

Lindbergh will look to erase its frustrations of the past as they host Eureka this Thursday afternoon.

“I’ve not seen Eureka play this year but they were seeded above us in the conference tournament,” Wieter said.

“Right now we need to have some intense practices. I think that we have the skills, just not the intensity,” she added.

The Eureka contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
