Flyers upbeat headed into districts

By STEPHEN GLOVER

For the Call

Though some may not have taken notice, the Lindbergh High School girls’ soccer team has strung together a nice three-game winning streak before entering the district tournament this week.

In fact, in their last seven games the Flyers have sported a record of 5-2.

“In the last two weeks, we’ve really started doing some nice things offensively,” Head Coach Mark Giesing told the Call. “I think the offense has really started to develop and we’re finally able to put the ball into the net.”

The Lindbergh Flyers (9-12-1, 3-3-1 Su-burban West) finished the regular season last Friday afternoon with a 4-0 thumping of Fox.

Lindbergh High’s win ensured a fourth-place finish overall in the conference standings.

Sophomore midfielder Bridget Holmes got the Flyers on the scoreboard in the second half with her third goal of the 2003 season. Holmes’ game-winning goal also was her second of the year.

“Bridget has been a very steady player for us,” Giesing said. “She’s one of the most talented and exciting players on the team that knows what to do with the ball.”

Grabbing Lindbergh’s second and third goals of the game was freshman defender Allison Ubriacho, who immediately has made an impact on the Flyers’ roster after recently being called up from the junior varsity squad.

The Flyers’ final goal of the game came from sophomore midfielder Mary Catherine Richmond.

“Allison plays with a lot of intensity and enthusiasm,” Giesing said. “Mary Catherine moved back to the midfield position in order to give her a little more playing time.

“Her goal came off a corner kick where she got control of the ball in the air, which we really like about her,” he added.

Lindbergh competes in the District 3 Tournament, which will be played at Webster Groves High School.

The tournament is comprised of Cor Jesu Academy, Lindbergh, Mehlville, Nerinx Hall, Notre Dame and Webster Groves, which obviously makes it one of the toughest districts in the state.

But that doesn’t seem to worry Giesing and his troops as he looks at the upcoming challenge in a positive aspect.

“It’s a pretty competitive district,” Giesing said. “We’re in the exact position in terms of seed when we went to the state final three years ago. The thing about districts is that anything can happen and we enjoy being the underdog.”

The Flyers were slated to play Webster Groves on Monday — after the Call went to press. Should they reach the championship game of the tournament today — May 22 — the Flyers will play at 7 p.m. at Webster Groves.
