Flyers start fresh in district tourney, aim for win streak

Now that the 2005 regular season is complete, the Lindbergh High baseball team is hoping the postseason will mark a new be-ginning.

The Flyers (4-20, 1-6 Suburban West) finished out the regular season in the Su-burban South/West Conference Tourn-ament, playing a grueling seven games in nine days.

Lindbergh finished the tournament with a 2-4 record overall, including a 7-3 loss to Rockwood Summit last Thursday afternoon.

“Going into the game we played pretty close to every day,” Flyers head coach Darin Scott told the Call.

“We had a breakdown defensively that cost us a few runs and we didn’t do a whole lot offensively,” he said.

Despite the loss, the Flyers head coach was pleased with the effort of starting pitcher Andrew Keltner, who came out of the gates firing.

The freshman hurler threw three innings of shutout ball before giving up seven runs on six hits in 41/3 innings pitched.

Keltner struck out four in his first career start on the Flyer varsity squad.

“Overall, I was pleased with how he threw,” Scott said.

“It’s something positive to look forward to for the future,’ he added.

Lindbergh’s Tim Eikmeier came in to relieve Keltner in the fifth inning and the sophomore relief pitcher held the Falcons scoreless in 12/3 innings pitched.

Eikmeier gave up just two hits and struck out one in the Flyers loss to Rockwood Summit.

The Flyers offense was largely centered around the performance of junior second baseman Justin Schinsky, who went 2-3 at the plate with two runs batted in and one run scored.

Schinsky is batting .270 with eight runs batted in this season.

“Justin really started off the season with a hot bat,” Scott said. “He then hit a slump, which can last a while in high school baseball.

“But it really looks like he’s swinging the bat and hopefully we can make a little run come districts,” he added.

Senior David Eikmeier also had a solid afternoon at the plate with a 2-3 performance.

The Flyers starting catcher is batting .255 with two runs batted in.

“I really can’t say enough about how he’s battled this year,” Scott said.

“He’s really stepped it up and wants to play every day,” Scott said.

The Flyers are back in action this week as they compete in the District 3 tournament at Mehlville Senior High School, 3200 Le-may Ferry Road.

Lindbergh’s opening round game was slated for Monday — after the Call went to press.

“There’s no doubt that we’ve struggled all year long,” Scott said. “Hopefully we can come out swinging and go at it like it’s a new season.”
