Flyers’ soccer team nixes Webster Groves in quarterfinals; falls to Cor Jesu in semis

Throughout most of the 2004 season, the Lindbergh High School girls’ soccer team seemed to not be clicking on all cylinders.

That was until May 3 when the Flyers defeated Webster Groves for a 5-3 win.

It was that point in the season that Lindbergh head coach Mark Giesing believes that his team finally started playing together as a team.

“I think that at 13-10-1, we were a slightly better team than we were last year,” Giesing told the Call.

“During the second half of the season, we were really happy with the upswing of our play. The Webster and Parkway Central games were a really big turning point for us.”

On May 17, the Flyers found themselves in a battle with Webster Groves in the quarterfinal match of the District No. 2 tournament.

“That was a frustrating game for us,” Giesing explained. “I liked how we played. We just couldn’t finish.”

Lindbergh received a goal in the first half by junior striker Bridget Holmes to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

“There was a bit of a scramble in the box and Bridget was there to poke the ball in,” Giesing said. “It was really nice to see her go in there and muscle her way to the ball.”

After a goal by Webster Groves’ Betsy Scherzer in the second half of play, the Flyers found themselves in overtime and then penalty kicks against the Statesmen.

In penalty kicks, the Flyers received goals from seniors Becky Christ, Allie and Angie Libby to propel Lindbergh to victory as Webster Groves failed to convert on any of the penalty shots.

Unfortunately, the Flyers had little time to celebrate their win as they fell to Cor Jesu 3-0 on May 19 in the semifinal.

“Obviously, they (Cor Jesu) are a great team and they jumped on us early,” Giesing said. “After the second goal, we started playing mad and were not going to let this become a blowout. I thought our team played really hard, but we were overmatched.”

The Flyers will lose seven players to graduation this season in Christ along with the Libby sisters, Sarah Cole, Bethany Jockish, Lauren Johnson and Nancy LaRose. One of the keys to the team’s success this season was its senior leadership, according to Giesing. He only hopes that this year’s graduating class is a measuring stick for seasons to come.

“Our seniors were incredibly good in terms of leadership,” Giesing said.

“We’re losing seven great kids that have put a lot of time and energy into this program and we’ll definitely miss that next year.”
