Flyers soccer team making some progress

The Lindbergh High School girls’ soccer team competed competed in the Southwest Missouri State University Icebreaker Tournament where the Flyers found themselves rained out on Sunday afternoon.

But the Flyers did get in two games on Saturday as they squared off against Springfield Parkview and Fort Osage.

“I think we’re making progress, but it’s slow progress and we have lot to do as of yet,” Lindbergh Head Coach Mark Giesing told the Call.

Lindbergh currently is without the services of senior goalkeeper Claire Ward, who is out of the net with a broken finger.

Yet the situation actually has brought about an interesting situation as freshman Haley Fox has stepped into the role of keeper quite nicely. Since Ward actually can play in the field, Giesing has moved her to the midfielder position.

“Haley has done a great job in the net,” Giesing said. “That she’s a veteran club player actually gives us a very nice problem. We’ll expect her to rotate in and our of some situations rather than playing the whole season at the junior varsity level.”

The Flyers opened up the SMS tourney with a 2-1 win over Springfield Parkview as junior forward Becky Christ scored in the first 15 minutes of play.

“Becky did a great job at following up on shots,” Giesing said. “It was a good hustle goal off the initial shot.”

Also scoring in the first half of play for the Flyers was freshman midfielder Alli-son Giles, who blasted a goal off a corner kick.

“We’ve had some success in putting corners inside the box this season,” Giesing said. “She got into the box and physically muscled the ball through the crowd.”

The Flyers did not receive as much success in their second match of the tournament against Fort Osage as they suffered a 3-0 setback. Junior Brandi Beal torched the Flyers for three goals in just 15 minutes of play.

“They had one girl (Beal) who was the best that I’ve seen in the past two years …,” Giesing said. “They scored all three of their goals in about 15 minutes.”

Life doesn’t get much easier for the Flyers this week as they play Oakville at home this Wednesday evening.

“I think we measure our success in how we play against Oakville,” Giesing said. “I think that’s a good testament to Dave Robben and how he’s run that program. The key to the game is going to be if we can generate an offense.”

The Flyers match against Oakville is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
