Saturday’s game between the Oakville and Lindbergh high school girls’ soccer teams may be a pivotal point for both squads.

The game not only had implications for the Suburban West Conference standings, but also for next month’s District 4 Tournament.

Lindbergh (4-4-2, 3-2 Suburban West) scored two goals in the second half to take a commanding 3-1 win on the road.

“It was probably our first complete game of the year,” Lindbergh head coach Mark Giesing told the Call. “We were really giving up goals by teams beating us in the air. I think that this was the first time that we were better than our opponent in the air.”

The defeat for Oakville (8-2-2, 3-2 Suburban West) marked an odd situation as the Tigers have lost two of their last three games.

“When you’ve had the success and the recognition that we’ve had at the beginning of the season, there’s going to be a target on our back,” Oakville head coach Dave Robben told the Call. “Every team we see now is going to be very motivated to play.

“But the credit has to go to Lindbergh in terms of what they didn’t allow us to do. In the second half, Lindbergh really stepped it up and put a lot of pressure on the ball.”

The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead about 90 seconds into the first half when senior midfielder Megan Flecke connected with senior forward Brooke Inman for her sixth goal of the season.

“It was a well-executed goal,” Robben said. “That goal was early into the game, but there wasn’t much to say after that because Lindbergh limited our chances.”

Lindbergh generated the equalizer about 15 minutes later when senior forward Aly Reynolds scored on an assist by junior forward Amy Ubriaco.

The goal was Reynolds’ sixth of the season.

“That was probably one of the most ex-citing goals of the year,” Giesing said. “Aly made a nice run in between two defenders and her shot was drilled into the lower right corner of the goal.”

The Flyers’ second goal came at the 20-minute mark of the second half when sophomore defender Brittany Casey scored on a pass by sophomore defender Desiree Cain.

Casey’s goal was her fifth of the year.

“Desiree won the ball out of the air and noticed that Brittany was available,” the Lindbergh coach said. “Brittany settled the ball and took the shot.”

Lindbergh hammered in the last nail to the Tigers’ coffin with about five minutes left in the game when Ubriaco connected again with Reynolds.

“Amy took the ball deep down the end line and beat off two defenders and saw that Aly was at the penalty kick spot,” Giesing said. “Aly got control of the ball and put it into the lower left corner of the goal. It was a really pretty goal.”

Both teams were scheduled to resume play Tuesday — after the Call went to press — in the Catholic Youth Council Tournament at the Anheuser-Busch Conference Center in Fenton.

Oakville was slated to face Webster Groves while Lindbergh was scheduled to meet Pacific.

The Flyers are the defending champions of the CYC Tournament after beating Althoff 2-0 last year.

“This is one of the premier tournaments in the area and we’re coming in as the returning champions,” Giesing said. “I feel like we’ve turned a small corner in our style of play and think that this tournament is a good start for that final run at the end of the season.

Oakville, on the other hand, will look to get back on track after suffering a disappointing week.

“We’ve been able to move through the bracket to play on Friday and last year we lost to Trinity on penalty kicks,” Robben said. “It’s a competitive tournament that comes at the right time of the year.”
