The basketball season got rougher for the Lindbergh High School boys’ team at the turn of the new year.

The Flyers (5-9, 1-3 Suburban West) have gone 1-4 in January and are riding a four-game losing streak, which includes a disappointing 64-60 loss to Northwest last Friday.

“I think that we played probably one of our better first halves all year,” Flyers’ head coach Jason Wolfard told the Call. “We came out in the second half and we just couldn’t execute when we needed to. Our rebounding and turnovers are what’s been hurting us lately.”

Lindbergh jumped out to a commanding 42-32 lead at halftime before being out-scored 32-18 in the second half.

“We have to find some way to finish games,” Wolfard said. “That’s been the story this week for us.”

Lindbergh’s Ben Harmon and Richard Williams led the Flyers with 13 points each.

Harmon also had three rebounds, one steal and one assist. The sophomore guard is averaging 6.6 points and 1.3 rebounds a game this season.

“I think that this was a game where Ben finally found what kind of game he needs to play,” Wolfard said. “He really seemed to get into the flow of things more than he had all season. I’m really hoping that this is a turning point for him.”

Williams notched a team-high six assists while hauling down three rebounds.

The senior point guard is leading the Fly-ers in scoring with 18.8 points a game this season, while amassing 50 assists and 22 steals.

“Richard’s been in a little bit of a struggle here lately,” Wolfard said. “He’s got to learn to let the offense come to him. But I think he’s going to get his confidence back soon.”

Lindbergh sophomore forward Robby Meeh also scored in double figures for the Flyers with a 10-point performance, including three rebounds and one assist. Meeh is averaging 7.6 points and 4.1 rebounds a game this season.

“Robby’s been playing real consistent here lately,” Wolfard said. “He’s starting to take more looks at the basket when he gets them.”

The Flyers travel to Jenks, Okla. for the Jenks Senior High Invitational, which runs from Thursday through Saturday.

“It should be exciting to get these guys turned around and get our confidence back,” Wolfard said. “Hopefully it will be a nice trip for the guys to get away for a while.”

Lindbergh’s first game of the tournament is at 8:30 p.m. today — Jan. 20 — against Edmond Memorial of Oklahoma. The championship game is 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
