Tom Beauchamp walked off the Lindbergh High football field with a huge smile last Friday night, along with all the Flyer fans.

The head coach watched his Flyers outlast St. Louis UniversityiHigh 24-21 in quadruple overtime.

“What a great evening,” Beauchamp told the Call. “I enjoyed every second of it.”

Not only did the game give Lindbergh its second win of the season, it also signified the beginning of the district playoffs, which is a completely new season, Beauchamp said.

“This is our second season and we’re not going to worry about what happened in the past,” he said. “The kids put together the kind of game that they’re capable of playing.”

The Flyers (2-6, 1-5 Suburban West) jumped out to a 7-0 lead when senior fullback Charles Brooks scored on a 19-yard run as the clock struck zero in the first quarter. Brooks finished with 10 carries for 54 yards.

“Charles is a tough, big and physical player,” Beau-champ said. “He did a great job on that play and had a great game.”

The Junior Billikens responded late in the third quarter as senior quarterback Matt Behr connected with senior tight end Curtis Hoette on a five-yard touchdown pass. SLUH then took a 14-7 lead early in the fourth quarter as Behr threw a 61-yard pass to wide receiver Paul Chaney.

Lindbergh tied the score at 14 with 5:52 left in the game as junior quarterback Joe Haas tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to Kelan Bannecke. Haas finished 6-16 for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

“Joe’s struggled at times, but he’s not backed off or even been afraid,” Beau-champ said. “I think that he showed us that last night against a good team like SLUH.”

SLUH snatched a 21-14 lead in the first overtime period on junior running back Stephen Simmons’ three-yard touchdown run.

But the Flyers stormed back on a 13-yard touchdown reception by Bannecke that knotted the score at 21.

Bannecke turned in a four-reception performance for 47 yards and two touchdowns.

“Basically, Joe dropped back and Ban-necke ran a great route,” Beauchamp said. “Kelan’s done a great job for us this season.”

Both teams went scoreless in the second and third overtime periods until Lindbergh senior place kicker Brian Tiefenbruck nailed a 42-yard field goal in the fourth overtime, clinching the Flyers’ 24-21 victory. The field goal was Tiefenbruck’s longest of the season.

Brian’s a great kid and is probably one of his worst critics,” Beauchamp said. “He probably could have nailed it (the field goal) for 50 yards because he put it right down the middle.”

Lindbergh faces its second district-playoff test this Friday, traveling to Vianney for a game that could decide just who may advance to the state playoffs.

“They’re a well-coached program with a lot of history,” Beauchamp said. “They don’t mind being the spoiler and it’s still anybody’s districtias of yet.”
