Flyers’ girls’ soccer gains valuable experience during Icebreaker Invitational in Springfield

Just before the official beginning of spring break, the girls’ soccer team at Lindbergh High School traveled to Springfield for the Southwest Missouri State University Icebreaker Invitational.

The Flyers (4-2) have played six games during the past week, which gave them some valuable onfield experience at such an early point in the season.

“We’ve had six games over the past week and we saw some good competition down in Springfield,” Flyers head coach Mark Giesing told the Call.

Lindbergh opened the Icebreaker Invitational with a 3-1 setback to Blue Springs South.

“We matched up well against them,” Giesing explained. “Despite the defeat, I thought we played pretty well in that game.”

The Flyers’ lone goal of the game was scored by senior midfielder Angie Libby, who currently has two goals and one assist this season. She and her twin sister Allie have done a remarkable job at solidifying the Flyers’ midfield this season, according to their head coach.

“They’re both outstanding players,” Giesing said. “They’ve done a great job at solidifying our midfield. They’re one of the main keys to our offense this season.”

Lindbergh bounced back from its loss to Blue Springs South with a 4-0 pounding of Parkview.

“It was a game where we were obviously the stronger team going in,” Giesing said. “I think that our backs did a great job at shutting them down.”

Both Angie and Allie Libby racked up goals for the Flyers, as well as freshman forward Aly Reynolds and sophomore forward Alex Placke.

“Alex is a very hard-working player,” Giesing said. “It was a pure hustle goal.”

The Flyers continued their dominance of the Springfield schools with a 2-0 decision over Glendale.

“It was a really good game because I believe that Glendale made it to the Final Eight last season,” Giesing said. “They (Glendale) had a good midfielder that we ended up shutting down throughout the game.”

Lindbergh received goals from junior striker Bridget Holmes and junior defender Claire Niehoff.

“Bridget had a great shot that went into the corner,” Giesing said.”Claire’s been coming off the bench right now for us and is a real solid defender. With the rain, it was a little difficult for the keeper to handle the ball.”

The Flyers are back in action Thursday, April 8, as they travel to Eureka for a non-conference friendly against the Wildcats.

The Flyers played Eureka last Thursday and needed a victory in penalty kicks to put the Wildcats away.

“Eureka was a very physical game that we had to win in penalty kicks,” Giesing explained. “They’ve got a great defense and we know that we’ve got to work extremely hard to get a goal against them. It’s going to be a real defensive battle.”

Lindbergh’s match against Eureka is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
