Flyers girls’ basketball team crushes Affton

When examining the girls’ basketball team at Lindbergh Senior High School, one realizes that it’s not necessarily its offense that wins games, but rather its defense.

The Flyers (4-0) have smothered their opponents this season with a defense that is yielding just 34.25 points a game. Such was the case Friday evening in Lindbergh’s 65-35 win at home over Affton.

“We’re finally starting to play as a team,” Lindbergh head coach Bill Thoele told the Call. “We finally played a good, hard four quarters.”

Lindbergh’s intensity was apparent in the first half of play as it pounded the Cougars with a 45-21 lead at halftime.

Yet like many other coaches, Thoele believes that his players still have some room to improve their game.

“We came out from the tip-off and played really well,” Thoele said. “I think we’re still not as good of a team as we can be though.”

Lindbergh’s Amy Hake led all scorers with 22 points. The junior guard also was outstanding on defense with eight steals, two rebounds and one blocked shot.

“Amy’s been just phenomenal,” Thoele said. “She anticipates so well and her hands are so quick.”

Also scoring in double figures for the Flyers was sophomore center Meaghan Endicott with 13 points and four rebounds. The Flyers head coach is hoping that with a little more confidence, the rookie will become an even more complete player.

“Meaghan handles the ball very well,” Thoele said. “All she needs right now is a little more confidence and I think she’s beginning to feel a little more confident out on the court.”

Lindbergh returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Friday as it plays host to Oakville in what is becoming a good rivalry between the two schools. The Tigers handed the Flyers a 64-57 loss in regular-season play last season, but Lindbergh bounced back in the first round of districts in a 38-37 win over Oakville.

Thoele and his troops are expecting nothing less than a tough game with their south county rivals.

“It seems like Oakville is turning into our rival,” Thoele said. “They like to press and run the ball, which I think benefits us too.”
