The Lindbergh High School girls’ basketball team has gotten itself up off the ground after suffering back-to-back losses to Hazelwood West and Oakville.

The Flyers (6-2) advanced to the championship game of the Seckman Holiday Tournament Monday, Dec. 29 — after the Call went to press.

Lindbergh opened the tournament with a 66-35 bombing of Festus, in which four Flyers scored in double figures.

“I’m pretty happy with the way things are going this season,” Flyers head coach Bill Thoele told the Call.

“Tournament-wise, I think we had a good team effort against Festus. We had put the game away by halftime,” he added.

After the first quarter of action, the Flyers held a 27-11 advantage.

By halftime, the game was clearly out of hand as Lindbergh led 47-23.

Yet one of the things that Thoele believed was beneficial to his team was the opportunity to give all of his players some time out on the court.

“When you jump out like that, it gives other kids on the team a chance to play,” the Lindbergh coach said. “We really played as a team and everyone contributed to the win. It’s a fun game when everyone can contribute.”

Lindbergh’s Paula Smith led all scorers with 16 points. The junior forward currently is second on the team in scoring this season with 10.3 points per game, while averaging 8.5 rebounds a contest. She also leads the team in blocked shots with 16 denials this year.

Sophomore guard Laura Therina racked up 15 points, while junior guard Amy Hake recorded 10 points.

Senior forward Bethany Jockish rounded out Lindbergh’s scorers in double figures with 10 points.

In the semifinal of the Seckman Tournament, the Flyers found themselves in a tough battle with host Seckman.

The Flyers worked their way to an ugly, 51-42 win over the Jaguars, according to Thoele.

“It was not a pretty game,” Thoele said. “We knew going in that they always play good in their tournament.

“It was an ugly win, but we needed to win like that. We did what we needed to do to win the game.”

Hake led the Flyers in scoring with 18 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and two assists in the win.

“We depend on her a lot in every game,” Thoele said. “She got some big baskets near the end of the game for us.”

Lindbergh begins Suburban West Conference action Friday, Jan. 9, as it will play host to Parkway West in a key conference contest.

The Longhorns handed Lindbergh a 68-56 loss last season and Thoele knows his troops will have their work cut out for them.

“It’s our first conference game and they’re already 2-0 in conference play,” Thoele said.

“Their best players are their post players and we need to not have many turnovers. I think we’re at our best when we’re pressing and causing turnovers,” he added.

The Flyers game against Parkway West is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
