For Tom Gose and the rest of the Lindbergh High School wrestling team, the streak was kept alive.

That streak would be the one in which the Flyers have had at least one medalist each year for the past nine years at the Missouri State Championships, which were held last weekend in Columbia.

“I was fairly pleased that we took two kids to state and one of them medal,” Gose, Lindbergh’s head wrestling coach, told the Call. “Our season was a disappointment because of injuries, but we finished it off on a good note.”

Lindbergh’s Jeff Streibig captured a fourth-place finish at the 130-pound weight class after suffering a fall at 1:48 to Jon Gerhold of Oak Park in the third-place match. Gose believes that Streibig’s past experiences at the state championships were one of the keys to the junior’s success this season.

“He’s been up there before and the second trip helps,” Gose said. “He handled the pressure really well and when he’s focused on something and really wants to win, he will.”

Senior Dan Virtue (140 pounds) may not have garnered a medal like his teammate, but he ends his high school wrestling career with quite an impressive resume. Virtue racked up 96 wins and was a four-time varsity letter winner.

“Dan didn’t medal, but he wrestled fairly well,” Gose said. “He’s got a lot of things to be proud of.”

Possibly one of the most impressive statistics that Virtue has is the fact that, as a freshman, he had no wrestling experience whatsoever.

“He (Virtue) came into his freshman year and had no wrestling experience, but an extensive Judo background,” Gose said. “Dan had a good career considering he had no experience.”

Although the Flyers are graduating a good core of seniors from this season’s team, Gose is excited about his squad for the 2004-2005 season.

One of the key reasons for Gose’s excitement is the fact that the Lindbergh junior varsity wrestling team completed the season with an undefeated record.

“It’s going to be interesting,” Gose said. “Our JV team was undefeated this year and they’ll be hungry. I’m really excited about it.”
