Now that the district playoffs are in full swing, the Lindbergh High School football team has found itself in a tough situation.

The Flyers (6-2, 5-1 Suburban West) drop-ped a heartbreaking 13-7 loss to St. Louis University High Friday night in the first round of the District No. 2 playoffs.

The loss to the Junior Billikens puts the Flyers in a situation where they have to win their final two games of the season against Vianney and Kirkwood, while hoping that SLUH either loses to Kirkwood or Vianney.

“A first-round loss in districts puts you under the gun,” Lindbergh head coach Tom Beauchamp said. “I was very pleased. The kids played hard and gave it their all.”

After two quarters of scoreless play, SLUH took a 6-0 lead when Eric Hunt caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Paul Chaney with 8:51 left in the third quarter.

The Junior Billikens extended their lead to 13-0 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Chaney to Hunt.

Lindbergh responded midway through the fourth quarter on a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Robby Meeh to tight end Chris Gal with 6:15 left to play.

Meeh was solid throughout the evening filling in for senior Joe Haas, who’s out for the season with a broken ankle. The junior quarterback was 10 of 21 for 132 yards and one touchdown.

“Robby is one of those kind of kids with a great competitive attitude,” Beauchamp explained. “Any time you have him in a ball game, he’s going to compete and that’s going to be good for your team.”

Gal also was solid for the Flyers with three receptions for 40 yards. The senior tight end and linebacker also was tough on defense with six tackles and two assists.

“Chris has been one of those consistent kind of players all year long for us,” Beau-champ said. “He goes out there and plays good solid football every week for us.”

Two other defensive players who had strong evenings were linebackers Jeff Gabris and Peter Schoemehl. Gabris led the Flyers with 10 tackles and three assists. The senior linebacker leads Lindbergh with 57 tackles and 28 assists.

“Jeff is a very hard-nosed football player,” Beauchamp said. “He really helped us slow down SLUH’s rushing attack.”

Schoemehl recorded a solid evening of eight tackles and two assists. The junior has 34 tackles and 11 assists this season.

“He (Schoemehl) really set the tone for us by starting the game with some hard hitting,” Beauchamp said. “Peter really put the hammer down for us.”

The Flyers are back in action Friday when they play host to Vianney in a game that could decide whether Lindbergh has a shot to advance out of district play.

The Golden Griffins (7-1, 3-0 Metro Cath-olic) dropped a 47-12 decision to Kirk-wood Friday as the Pioneers bulldozed Vi-anney for 415 yards rushing.

“Vianney (is) a very good ball team,” the Lindbergh coach said. “They have a good quarterback and some quality wide re-ceivers. This is going to be one of those situations where we’re going to have to strap it on and be ready to play.”

Lindbergh’s game against Vianney begins at 7 p.m.
