The Lindbergh Flyers’ baseball team has started off the season on a rough note, and Mother Nature isn’t helping.

The Flyers (0-2) had seven games scheduled in the past week and a half, but have only been able to play two of them due to inclement weather.

As a young team, Lindbergh needs more playing time to gain experience.

“Things have been tough right now with the weather,” Lindbergh head coach Darin Scott told the Call. “We’ve only played two out of seven games scheduled.”

Lindbergh played host to Oakville last Thursday and dropped a disappointing 7-2 decision.

“With us being an inexperienced team, we made some crucial mistakes and Oakville capitalized on that,” Scott said. “In reality, we didn’t have any physical mistakes, but we had several mental errors.”

The Flyers found themselves down 2-0 after one inning, and the Tigers slapped to-gether two more runs in the third and three runs in the sixth en route to the 7-2 victory.

“We were playing behind the whole game and it’s difficult to win when you’re making mental errors,” Scott said.

Lindbergh starting pitcher Caleb Monroe took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits. The junior hurler failed to strike out any batters walked three in the loss to the Tigers.

“It was his first varsity start and you could tell there were a few butterflies,” Scott said. “He’s got a good arm, but as soon as we work on the mental side, hopefully he can get in there and compete.”

Justin Miller relieved Monroe in the third inning and gave up three more runs on three hits. The junior reliever struck out one and walked three in his first relief effort of the season.

“Justin’s the type of pitcher that’s going to challenge hitters,” Scott said. “He came in and shut them down for two innings, but we didn’t do anything offensively to get back into the ballgame.”

Lindbergh’s strongest effort at the plate was from sophomore Nick Higgs, who went one for two with one walk and one run scored. The Flyer third baseman also was solid at the plate in the Flyers loss to Vianney earlier in the week, batting two of four with a double and two runs scored.

“Nick’s got a lot of talent, but he’s a little rough around the edges,” Scott said. “I think that he’s going to be a big contributor to our offense.”

The Flyers are back in action at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, traveling to Parkway Central for a non-conference meeting with the Colts.

“I think we’re kind of both in the same boat because they also lost a lot of seniors,” Scott said.

“Right now, we’re going to go back out there and hopefully get some wins before the conference schedule starts,” he said.
