Filing to open for seat on SLCC board

Filing for Subdistrict 4 on the St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees opens at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16.

John S. Mikolay, who has been a Subdistrict 4 representative since 1998, currently holds the seat.

Filing for the seat closes at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20. An election will take place April 6 to fill the vacancy. The winner will serve a six-year term.

A six-member board representing the four subdistricts of the college service area governs St. Louis Community College. Subdistrict 4 includes the Rockwood, Parkway, Valley Park, Kirkwood, Lindbergh and Mehlville school districts, and small parts of the Meramec Valley School District and Franklin and Jefferson counties. Two trustees represent this subdistrict. Subdistricts 2 and 3 are the two smaller subdistricts, each represented by one trustee.

Individuals seeking trustees seat must be at least 21 years of age and must be a resident voter of Subdistrict 4 for at least one year before the April 6 election. A candidate must obtain at least 25 signatures of registered voters from the subdistrict on nominating petitions. The Board of Election Commissioners validates the signatures before the election is held. Each declaration of candidacy must be notarized before it is returned to the office of the board of trustees’ administrative associate at the Joseph P. Cosand Community College Center, 300 S. Broadway.

Declarations of candidacy, nominating petitions and a description of the subdistrict are available in the trustees’ administrative associate’s office at the Cosand Center. The office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; however, it will be closed Dec. 24 to Jan. 1 and on Jan. 19, 2004.

A lottery system will be used to place candidates’ names on the ballot. All candidates will be notified about the lottery and all other requirements for filing for office at the time they receive filing forms.

For more information, call Becky Garrison, administrative associate to the board, at 539-5154.
