Faith Lutheran builds home, hope

Faith Lutheran Church in Oakville is calling on area residents to pitch in and lend a hammer to build a home beginning 8 a.m. Saturday, June 25.

The build will take place on Faith’s front parking lot located at 6101 Telegraph Road.

From Saturday, June 25 through Saturday, July 16, the church will be using local volunteers to help make a dream home a reality. The home to be built will be a ranch with four bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, kitchen, laundry area, living room and basement.

Near the end of July, the walls will be transported to 303 England Drive in Crystal City. Work at the Faith site will be completed on the house primarily on Saturdays — June 25, July 2, July 9 and July 16. Overall completion will likely be this fall.

Builders, support for builders and lunch service positions are all in need for each Saturday, and different shifts are available. For specific dates/times and ways to lend a hand, visit

or contact Kay Bach at (314) 375-1106 or kay.bach@faithstl.org.

The recipients of the house — Ed and Crystal and their three kids, Ashlea, Stephanie and Ethan, and Ed’s father, Ralph — currently live in a mobile home in Festus, which is too small and is in need of lots of repairs. Ed suffered a work-related back accident in 2003 and has endured many procedures and therapy to heal his condition, but it continues to deteriorate, according to a news release.

Crystal is a six-plus year veteran of their local Wal-Mart store and “Grandpa Ralph,” a Marine veteran, has been an independent contractor most of his life as well as a pastor since 1979. He traveled the lower states in the 1990s to set up clothing centers and food pantries for the needy.

“The kids are doing well in school, and are excited about getting their own rooms and meeting new friends,” the family stated. “We are looking forward to working with Faith Lutheran Church and God bless all of you and good luck.”
