Letter to the Editor

To the editor:
After reading Carl Hendrickson’s Healthy Living column, “Pass along to future generations ‘the fourth R,’” I felt the need to res-pond. He wrote that he and other seniors have failed to teach the younger generations responsibility. As an “old millennial,” I see this not as a generational problem but a cultural one.
Every generation has those who are irresponsible, and in America’s current climate, it can feel like no one takes or wants responsibility. However, as a registered voter, I made sure to educate myself before recent elections that I did indeed vote in.
Others of my generation and younger that I know have done the same and will continue to do so. There are also those of my generation who are currently serving on school boards and aldermanic boards throughout our community. My parents, who are young seniors, passed along this knowledge of responsibility for community and family, and I intend to do the same for my children.
The future is not as bleak as it may seem. When we work together across generations, great things can happen. Rest assured that our calendars are marked for all upcoming appointments — they just happen to be on our phone.
