Event locations in south county and Jefferson County range from restaurants to parks to libraries. If you’re still searching for glasses, we’ve noted which events are handing out free glasses while they last. We’ve also noted how much totality you can expect at each site.

The South County Y will open its ballfields and pavilion to anyone in the community who would like to witness this historic event. We invite you to bring a blanket and pack a lunch to enjoy a picnic with your family while waiting for the eclipse to occur. Informational flyers and craft projects will be available.

An ice cream truck will be selling treats from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Parks and Recreation Department will host interactive activities showing just how difficult and how rare the odds are for this astronomical event to occur. Activities will include making your own model of a solar eclipse, constructing a sundial, and building a pinhole viewer. These activities are friendly to all ages.  There is no cost to participate. There will be eclipse viewing glasses available for purchase for $1.

Celebrate the eclipse at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium on Aug. 21. Our planetarium educators will narrate the events in the sky and provide fun activities for all ages outside the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. The Science Center is in the path of partiality meaning we will see over 99 percent of the eclipse.

West City Park will be the gathering spot to view the 2017 Eclipse in Festus.  We have acres and acres of open viewing space for visitors to come see the eclipse.  Parking will be at the ballfield complex parking lot, so there may be a little walking to find a perfect spot.  Join us at the West City Park stage Aug. 21 for informational presentations and the countdown to the eclipse.  Activities will be planned for the whole weekend at West City Park.  Eclipse activities are sponsored by the Festus Tourism Commission and in cooperation with the Festus Public Library.

All of our wonderful and quaint shops and restaurants will be open for business for the day. Usually the shops and restaurants in Kimmswick are closed on Mondays, but not on Monday August 21st. Our shops will be welcoming our guests and the restaurants will have indoor and outdoor seating available for all.
