Doris J. Maher (nee Marx), 81, died March 18.
Born in St. Louis, Mrs. Maher re-sided in Chesterfield. She was a retired counselor at Oakville Senior High School in the Mehlville School Dis-trict.
In 1943, Mrs. Maher graduated with a bachelors degree in education from what is now Harris-Stowe State College.
She later earned a masters degree in education from Northwestern Univer-sity in Evanston, III.
Mrs. Maher began her teaching career in the St. Louis Public School District in 1945, teaching at Bryan Hill Elemen-tary School, Busch Middle School and in the gifted program at Dewey Ele-mentary School.
In the early 1950s, she taught teachers at Harris Teachers College in the early 1950s. Mrs. Maher served as a supervisor of University of Missouri at Columbia student teachers from the St. Louis area.
In 1974, Mrs. Maher joined Oakville Senior High School as a counselor specializing in college placement.
For more than 12 years, she assisted juniors and seniors in planning for college.
After her retirement, Mrs. Maher worked as a real estate agent and volunteered at St. Lukes Hospital in Chester-field and with the Gateway Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Survivors include her sons, William R. Maher Jr. and Kevin A. Maher; daughter, Kathleen Maher; sister, Ann Monterubio; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Maher.
A memorial service was conducted at Central Presbyterian Church. A private family burial was at Sunset Cemetery.
