To the editor:
I think the American people have forgotten the true reason for the season.
The reason I say this is because while shopping at several stores, no store personnel wished me a “Merry Christmas” or a “Happy New Year.” Although I had made a large purchase, they only wished me a “Happy Holiday,” and tried to sell me a holiday tree that was on sale.
When I told them it was not a holiday tree but a Christmas tree, they became angry with me. So I went to the manager and let him know how I felt. He told me his policy was not to offend any one, so he told his personnel to say “Happy Holi-days.”
I told him that he had offended me and many other Americans like myself. In parting, I told him I wouldn’t be shopping there any more. In fact, I’m going to get my money back and go to another store that will wish me a “Merry Christmas.”
Then I remembered the reason for the season. It’s about a time for peace and happiness and to give gifts to each other and forgive one another.
So needless to say, I did not get a refund for my purchase, but in a loud voice I wished everyone a “Merry Christmas.” As I was returning to my car, I wished everyone I met a “Merry Christmas,” and to my surprise they also wished me one.
I feel like I came out the biggest winner of all. For as I was driving home I realized that I also had forgotten the reason for the season. So in closing, I must say be careful while shopping and wading through large crowds that you don’t lose the reason for the season. “Merry Christmas” and a “Happy New Year” to all.
