Don’t be fooled by Prop D, Crestwood writer says

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

Listening to the ads leads voters to believe that the revenue generated from the gas tax will be used to fix roads, bridges, et cetera. While this is true in part, the vast majority — 70 percent — will not go for fixing the roads.

Read the wording of Prop D: “… Shall Missouri law be amended to fund Missouri state law enforcement by increasing the motor tax…”

It goes on to read, “…. If passed, this measure will generate at least $288 million annually to the State Road Fund to provide for the funding of Missouri state law enforcement and $123 million annually to local governments for road construction and maintenance.”

Only 30 percent of the revenue generated will be used to fix roads. Seventy percent goes to the Highway Patrol for law enforcement. When $123 million is spread over all the roads, bridges, et cetera, in the whole state, how much will really be done to improve the road you drive on? Don’t be fooled by Prop D. Vote no.
