St. Johns United Church of Christ of Mehlville is inviting the local community to the grand opening celebration of its St. Johns Community Dog Park.

The celebration will kick off from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, when the dog park at 11333 St. Johns Church Road will open its gates to neighbors at a party with festivities for both young, old and furry. Dogs are optional. A dog parade will be held, with costumes optional.

“This project has received immense community support,” St. Johns pastor Steve Westbrook said in a news release. “From the neighboring residents to the local city of Green Park, the neighborhood support has been inspirational.”

There will be treats for all. The Lions Club will provide “dogs and chips” (hot dogs and potato chips) for people, and there will be dog treats for the dogs.

T-shirt sales will go toward maintenance and upkeep of the park.  Also for sale, just like the love-lock bridge concept which originated in Paris, engraved dog tags will be on display as memorials or honoraria.

Boy Scout Troop No. 824 in the Mehlville School District will unveil their Eagle Scout projects of benches, picnic tables and trash-can covers.
