To the editor:
I would like to express my concern for the location of a proposed casino south of Interstate 255 at the Mississippi River and in close proximity to the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
I should not be surprised that monetary values supersede the memory and honor due those of the military who have served their country. As a former bugler with the U.S. Army and having participated in many military burials, I can attest to the solemnity of such a burial. The 21-gun salute, the playing of “Taps” in the distance and the presentation of “Old Glory” to the family bring tears to many eyes.
The Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery is a solemn and hallowed resting place where friends and relatives go for moments of quiet and remembrance. That time should not be disturbed by billboards, neon signs and/or flashing lights announcing a casino.
The national cemetery and south county do not need that kind of distraction.
