Democrat Englund drops out of race; Leicht, Wagganer will meet in primary

One of the Democratic candidates for the 6th District County Council seat has withdrawn from the race.

Vicki Lorenz Englund of Oakville announced last week that she would withdraw from the County Council race, leaving two Democratic challengers in the Aug. 3 primary — Julie Leicht and Ron Wagganer.

“As you well know, a contentious primary race between two well-qualified candidates makes it much more difficult to defeat the Republican incumbent in the fall,” Englund stated in a May 11 letter to County Executive Charlie Dooley.

The winner of the Democratic primary will face incumbent Councilman John Campisi, R-south county, in the Nov. 2 election. Campisi is unopposed in the primary.

“Through much discussion and with the support of my family and friends, I believe this is the best decision for our party at the present time,” Englund stated in her letter to Dooley. “Julie Leicht and I have both worked diligently to engage our volunteers, to collect campaign contributions and to speak to as many 6th District residents as possible. Now we can spread the Democratic message for south county with one voice.

“I look forward to new opportunities and plan to join elective politics as a candidate in the future,” she added.
