Crestwood’s commercial tax rate increases

Crestwood’s residential tax rate will decrease for 2005 and the city’s personal property tax rate will remain unchanged, while the commercial tax rate will in-crease, the Board of Aldermen recently de-cided.

An ordinance establishing the 2005 tax rates was approved Aug. 23 by the Board of Aldermen with a 6-2 vote with Ward 1 Alderman Richard LaBore and Ward 2 Alderman Tim Trueblood opposed.

The residential tax rate will decrease to 24.1 cents per $100 of assessed valuation from 25 cents, while the personal property tax rate will remain unchanged at 25 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The city’s commercial tax rate will increase to 26.3 cents per $100 from 25 cents.

Before adopting the ordinance establishing the 2005 tax rates, aldermen voted separately on each rate. Aldermen voted unanimously to set the residential tax rate at 25 cents. A motion by Ward 3 Alderman Don Maddox to increase the personal property tax rate to 27.9 cents per $100 failed for lack of a second and the board then voted unanimously to keep it unchanged at 25 cents per $100.

Aldermen deadlocked 4-4 on a motion by Maddox, seconded by Ward 1 Alderman Richard Breeding, to increase the city’s commercial tax rate to 26.3 cents. Mayor Roy Robinson broke the tie in favor of the increase.

Besides Maddox and Breeding, Ward 1 Alderman Jim Kelleher and Ward 4 Alderman Pat Duwe voted in favor of the increase. Opposed were Trueblood, La-Bore, Ward 3 Alderman Jerry Miguel and Ward 4 Alderman Joe O’Keefe.
