Crestwood Legion varsity team shines in Ballwin tourney despite rainy weather

Just when the Crestwood American Legion varsity baseball team was looking forward to racking up a lot of wins over the holiday weekend, Mother Nature literally had to rain on its day.

The Post 777 team (8-7, 7-6 District 10) was planning on playing in the Ballwin Firecracker Tournament this past weekend and actually opened the tourney with a solid 9-6 win over Ballwin. Yet poor weather on Friday and Saturday forced the games to be canceled.

“That’s the second tournament we’ve been rained out of this year,” Crestwood head coach Sean Erwin told the Call. “It’s kind of sad because we came out and beat Ballwin, yet don’t get to finish the tournament. That’s just the way it goes sometimes.”

Crestwood starting pitcher Mark Spinner was solid in his 6 1/3 innings as he gave up five runs on seven hits. Spinner retired three via strikeout and walked three to bring his overall record to a perfect 4-0.

“Mark is a guy that when he goes out onto the mound, he gives you everything that he’s got,” Erwin said. “Ballwin is a very good team and they didn’t hit him hard at all.”

Receiving the save in the game was Dave Ounanian, who threw 22/3 innings and gave up just one run on one hit.

“Dave really stepped it up and closed the game out for us,” Erwin said.

Outfielder Chris Luebbert was stout at the plate with a 3-6 performance as he drove in two runs and stole two bases in the win. Luebbert currently is batting .390 with six doubles, two triples and two home runs along with 11 runs batted in.

“Chris has been great for us all year,” Erwin said. “He came out and played a great game both offensively and defensively. He gives you everything that he’s got and is a great competitor.”

Another Crestwood outfielder who had a solid day at the plate was Dan Healy, who went 2-5 with three runs batted in. Healy is batting .455 with six RBI.

“With the way that Dan’s played the last couple of games, we’ll see a lot more of him,” Erwin said. “When he’s gotten the opportunity, he’s really contributed for us.”

Crestwood is back in action today — July 8 — serving as host to Creve Coeur in a game that could determine just who has what it takes to win the district tournament next week.

“Creve Coeur is a very good team that has six college players,” Erwin said. “They’re the team to beat in the north. I think that it’s going to be a good measuring stick to let us know where we are this year.”

The Creve Coeur game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start at Lindbergh High School, 4900 S. Lindbergh Blvd.
