Crestwood legion begins

It’s been a roller coaster of a week for the Crestwood American Legion baseball team.

Post 777 (6-4) opened play on Wednesday of last week with a strong 9-5 win over Maryland Heights in which starting pitcher Tom Kammerer gave up zero earned runs on five hits. In his six innings thrown, Kammerer retired six batters via strikeout while walking none.

“They’re (Maryland Heights) a very young club and they just didn’t have the horses,” Crestwood head coach Roy Tippit told the Call. “They made a few mistakes that we capitalized on.”

Designated Hitter Adam Laury had a hot day at the plate as he went 2-4 with a triple and two runs batted in.

“Adam’s been designated hitting and a little bit streaky this season,” Tippit said. “He’s actually been a very pleasant surprise for us.”

On Thursday, the tide quickly changed for Post 777 as they suffered a 12-0 bombing at the hands of the Chesterfield American Legion.

“Chesterfield is a very good ball club,” Tippit said. “I was really disappointed that we didn’t score any runs against them.”

The the score appears to be a blowout, the game didn’t get out of hand until after starting pitcher Scott Hicks was pulled off the mound after the sixth inning. Hicks allowed just three earned runs on five hits as he struck-out six batters while taking the loss.

“Scott really threw a great game for us,” Tippit said. “It was a shame that it got out of hand like it did.”

Crestwood quickly rebounded from their loss with a 9-4 thumping of Oakville.

“In every game, I always try to stress pitching and defense and we had that,” Tippit said. “We finally hit the ball a little bit, so that helped us out a lot.”

Post 777 starting pitcher David Ounanian struggled in the first inning as he gave up a run to Oakville and then another run in the top of the third. He finished out the afternoon with five strikeouts and four runs in the winning effort

Crestwood returns to action this Thursday evening as they host Florissant at Lindbergh High School. Post 777 will then travel to Heine Meine on Saturday evening with a rematch against Oakville. The Florissant game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start with the Oakville contest starting at 8 p.m.
