Crestwood Elementary earns Gold Star Award

Crestwood Elementary School is one of only eight high-performing elementary schools statewide to be named a 2011 Missouri Gold Star School award recipient.

This is the second time in a row Crestwood has received this prestigious honor, according to a Lindbergh Schools news release. The first was in 2009, and schools can only be nominated every other year.

Established by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in 1991, the Gold Star program is designed to identify schools that are performing at a high level academically or making exceptional progress while serving a significant proportion of disadvantaged students. The state application requires schools to provide evidence of their success in such areas as curriculum, instruction and school leadership.

In 2009-2010, Crestwood’s state test scores ranked No. 4 among all elementary schools in Missouri.

“We are very excited about being named a 2011 Missouri Gold Star School,” Crestwood Elementary School principal Scott Taylor stated in the release. “Our teachers are amazing and provide outstanding instruction to our students, our students come to school each day engaged and ready to learn and our parents are so supportive and helpful. When your school has an excellent learning culture, a strong focus on character education and terrific instruction, you have all of the key ingredients for success. We are truly blessed at Crestwood.”

Recipients of the state’s Gold Star program may be eligible for the national Blue Ribbon award pending results of this year’s state assessments. Crestwood is already one of eight schools statewide to have been nominated for 2011 Blue Ribbon status.

“These eight exceptional elementary schools have met a high bar of excellence, and it is our honor to recognize them statewide,” Commissioner of Education Chris L. Nicastro stated in the release. “This achievement is a credit to the students, parents and staff who have dedicated themselves to excellence in education.”

Lindbergh Schools’ previous winners of the Gold Star School award include Kennerly and Truman elementary schools, and Sperreng Middle School.
